Managing Type 1 Diabetes can be hard! Here are some shortcuts we do at home that help us out.

Family Food Binder – This is probably the thing I look at the most. I call it the Family Food Binder because it has recipes but it is much more than that. Included with the binder is our T1D’s current ratios and correction levels, a step-by-step guide to meal/snack time, an overview of what Type 1 Diabetes is, how to detect highs and lows and how to treat them, recipes of meals we make that include the total carb contents and carb contents of takeout meals that we eat, among other things. I reference it multiple times a week. I created a video so that you can see what it looks like and you can view that at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzxZ44CaQY4.

Index Cards – They are such a simple tool that has helped us keep organized. Why? Because everything is always changing! For quick reference, I keep carb ratios on an index card, correction levels on an index card, lists of foods my T1D eats on an index card and each recipe I make goes on a card. If something changes, I simply throw the card away and start over on a new one. I like to put my cards in a binder so I organize them with a binder sleeve that I found at https://a.co/d/3K7trhW.

Desk Organizer – Getting a small shelf to hold all of our everyday type 1 diabetes items helped me feel A LOT better about being on top of things. I bought mine at https://a.co/d/aWCgR8h. In ours, we have our Family Food Binder, a binder of info the hospital gave to us, some cookbooks, needles, band-aids, gauze pads, overlay stickers and alcohol wipes. The organizer has freed up my counter space while also keeping our important tools accessible.

Pocket Guide – this is a smaller version of our family food binder. I don’t have recipes in it, but I do provide meal examples with carbs calculated and examples of what a day might look like for our T1D. I created it on index cards so that it can easily fit in her diabetes bag and be on the go with her at all times.
